Framework
November 9 - November 26 2011
Opening Reception: Thursday November 9, 2011 6-9pm

M55 is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition “Framework.” An Urban Studio/Art Collective collaboration. This exhibition seeks to explore alternative methods of portraiture, with a focus on the artist’s perceptions of their subject. Rather than limiting the work to traditional portraiture where the subject sits for the artist, participants were asked to investigate and highlight the unconventional approach.

In addition to creating a portrait, each artist was asked to create a “frame” that serves as an extension of the portrait itself, using materials that they associate with their subject. This component speaks to the concept of one’s psychological “framework” as seen thru the artist’s eye. Artists in this exhibition combine figurative, abstract, and mixed media elements to create the variety of portraits seen in this show.

Selected Artists: Greta Liz Anderson, Katrina Avino-Barracato, Mollie Bassett, Christa Brunks, Valentina Burzanovic, Pansum Cheng, Dimitri Dimizas, Crystal Fong, Kathleen Granados, Erica Geralds, Eric Gottshall , Faheem Haider, Young Eun Han, Cassandra Holden, Olga Kuznetsov, Christophe Lima, Victor Merriam, Yukiko Nakamura, Raisa Nosova, Lydia Pfeffer, Cristina Razzano, Emily Robinson, Regina Ruff, Julia Sinelnikova, Melissa Starke, Sarah Veloso, Lesley Wamsley & Hannah Wimpfheimer

"Letters From the Moon"

M55 Art
October 22 – November 7
Opening Reception Thursday, October 22nd, 6-9pm
Gallery hours: Wednesday – Saturday 12-6pm

M55 Art is pleased to present “Letters From The Moon,” a group exhibition of works by Kathleen Granados, Peter Hoffmeister, and Teresa Jarzynski.

While Granados organized and participated in a past group exhibition at M55 , this will be Hoffmeister and Jarzynski’s first time exhibiting work at the gallery. In addition, this is the first time all three artists will be working together.

This exhibition seeks to contextualize each artists’ investigation of related concepts, from the subconscious and the nature of dreams, to identity. The juxtaposition of these three artists will generate new meanings as well as expand pre-existing ones.
Granados and Jarzynski both use traditional craft materials, such as yarn, fabric, and beads. Granados challenges the usage of such media through mixed media sculpture and installation, while Jarzynski creates large abstractions on canvas with paint, embellished with fabric, to explore the lines between fine art and craft. Hoffmeister combines aspects of figuration and abstraction via a mixed media exploration of the portraiture format, using his earlier abstract “Swingscapes” as a departure point.

Fine Art vs. Illustration

For the first time ever, the Fashion Institute of Technology’s Fine Art Collective and the Underground League of Illustrators will address the elusive and controversial issues stemming from the similarities and differences of the respective artwork they create, sharing space at the 2/20 Gallery, 220 West 16th Street, New York, NY. The exhibition will open on April 21st and run through May 8th.

The difference between an illustrator and a fine artist ranges from subtle to screaming. Artistic ideology, style and size vary and converge in their work and philosophy. The intent of the Art Collective and the Illustration Club is to force these issues into the open before the viewer and to challenge outright the popular images caricaturing both groups.
